National Junior Honor Society Eligibility

MCS National Junior Honor Society Eligibilty

The National Junior Honor Society chapter of Monsignor Matthew F. Clarke School is a chartered and affiliated chapter of the prestigious national organization.  Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in the five areas of evaluation:  scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character.  Standards for selection are established by the national office of the National Junior Honor Society and have been revised to meet our local chapter needs.  Students are selected to be members by a three member Faculty Council which is appointed by the school administration.  In turn, this Faculty Council bestows the honor of membership upon qualified students on behalf of Monsignor Clarke School yearly.

Students in grades seven and eight are eligible for membership.  For the scholarship criteria, the student must have a cumulative GPA of 4.4 or better in the core subjects for each of the first two trimesters of the school year.  If an 8th grade student who was on the NJHS as a 7th grader fails to meet the scholarship portion, they will be counseled and could be removed from the NJHS.   Those students who meet the scholarship criteria are invited to complete a Student Activity Form and a Teacher Recommendation Form.  The Student Activity Form provides the Faculty Council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service.  The Faculty Council will be looking for a history of leadership experiences and participation in both the school and community.  To evaluate candidate’s character, disciplinary records are reviewed and a Teacher Recommendation Form is solicited for input regarding their professional reflections on a candidate’s service activities, character, citizenship, and leadership.   In addition, all candidates must complete an additional 10 hours of community service, above the 20 hours required for each middle school student at Monsignor Clarke.

All candidate forms and information must be submitted by the announced deadline.  Information is then carefully reviewed by the Faculty Council.  Once candidate’s forms and information are submitted, the Faculty Council will take it under careful review to determine membership.  A majority vote of the Council is necessary for selection.  Candidates are then notified regarding selection or non-selection.  Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school to recognize all the newly selected members.  Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance in all five criteria that led to their selection.  Students or parents who have questions regarding the selection process or membership obligations can contact the chapter advisor, Mrs. Mary Ellen Brown.
